Geography of Kuchaman City

The beautiful Kuchaman City is a small yet developed city, which basks in the glory of the regal history of Rajasthan. Placed in the north – eastern part of the Nagaur district this region is basically dry and hot with a general high range in temperature. The Nagaur district, which is located at 27.2° N 73.73 ° E with an average elevation of 990 feet or 302 metre, is a part of the Thar Desert region. Due to this topography, Kuchaman City is basically rough and parched, with undulating hilly tracks and sandy patches.

The city is exactly located at 27.151727°N 74.863243°E, around 145 kilo meters away from Jaipur and 101 kilo meters from Ajmer. This sub-urban city thrives mainly on tourism and salt industry. Because of its dry and sandy landscape, Kuchaman city is difficult for good agricultural production. The place has a dearth of green vegetation and also is low in ground water concentration.

Climate of Kuchaman City

Being a part of the Indian Thar Desert, the main climate of this region is termed as ‘Desert climate’. This means the place remains extremely hot. From March the temperature starts rising with occurrence of occasional sandstorms. May is the hottest month with temperature touching as high as 48 degree Celsius and April is the driest month of this region. On an average, summer months face the scorching heat of the Sun and temperature varies from 40.4o to 27.9o Celsius.

There is almost no monsoon season present. July and August witness scanty rainfall with an average limit of 310mm per year. These are the only months when Kuchaman city climate gets some humidity. The annual maximum potential evapotranspiration recorded is pretty high with highest (255.1 mm) being in the month of May and lowest (76.5 mm) in the month of December. January is the coldest month and temperature falls below 5 degree Celsius during this season.

Soil Condition and Agricultural Activities

Kuchaman city falls under the clayey loamy soil condition. This means 80% of the total soil composition is of sand and silt, while 20% comprises of soft clay. Moreover, over the years the ground water level of the entire district has fallen from 10 to 25 metre below the land surface. Among the entire Nagaur district, Kuchaman city and some other places have got some agricultural activities present. The loamy soil patches have kept this region favourable to agriculture. Almost 92% of the total working residents are either engaged in agricultural produce or in salt industry. Being one of the main suppliers of water in this part of Rajasthan, Kuchaman can face serious water crisis over the coming years. Babul, Shisham, Peepal, Akara, Dhanwood, Neem and Rohira are the main trees found in this region.

Demography of Kuchaman City

The Kuchaman city is under its own Municipality in Nagaur district and is divided into 30 wards for election. As per 2011 Census of India, the municipality had a total population of 61,969, of which 31,986 are male population and a female population of 29,983. the literacy rate of this region is as high as 76.53%, that is higher than the entire Rajasthan state. Male literacy is in the region of 86.82 % while female literacy rate is 65.65 %. 14.46% of the total population were under the age of 6 years. Of the total population roughly 15.89 % comprised of Scheduled Caste while Schedule Tribe were 0.17 %.

Lake Present in Kuchaman City

Kuchaman Lake is the main lake of this sub-urban city. This is a continental saline lake with a thick calcified boulder conglomerate bed. The sedimentation occurring is mainly of grey silt which is found on both the river banks. During summer months the water evaporates making the river bed look ash in colour. From a distance this area looks like a moon surface with ash barren rocky bed stretching for distance.
